Where is a fun, cheap, and not too far from where i live, weekend getaway?

I live in Southern California about 45 minutes from Los Angeles. I want to get away with my boyfriend for a weekend before the summer is over. I dont want to travel more than 4 hours, we dont want to go to vegas or laughlin because we are trying to make it cheap as possible but yet we want to have fun and have together time. Grocery/discount store between LAX and Santa Monica Doubletree Hotel?
