I bought tickets on Monday. The rate has gone down a lot. Can I get a refund of the difference?

Momof3boys asked:

The difference in price is about $150. Should I buy travel insurance for $16 and cancel then rebook the flight? Am I even allowed to do this. I know I can still get the travel insurance.
Grindking53: What if I rebook through another travel site using the same airline and flights?

  1. I think Southwest Airlines has some policy where they might do that but most airlines don’t as far as I know.

  2. Negative, if you cancel your tickets and attempt to buy new ones you will be subject to a rebooking charge of one hundred dollars per ticket. If the rebooked flight is indeed cheaper, which is truly rare, the airline will require payment of of one half of the difference of the two flights, in addition to the rebooking charge of course.

  3. ask at the travel counter before you check in its doubtful if they will, but its worth a try

  4. Sorry unfortunately you will not be able to depending on which airline you chose and the fare rules to your ticket. Unfortuantely, many airlines do not allow any changes especially with you paying just $150.00. I work for an airline and the travel insurance is only for injury, death, and emergencies such as an airline cancellation. This will not protect you, so do not buy it.

  5. More than likely you purchased a non-refundable fare. It will be outlined in the Fare Rules that is printed on the itinerary. Airlines can run a sale at any given point in time and once you purchase your ticket, unless it is a full fare, or what is called a Y fare, it is non refunable. Some Q fares are, but not all. Look on your itinerary for a letter, most airlines have the same fare designators for full fares. If it says Y, you can get a refund if its Q, possibly bot not always, most of the bottome tier fares L,U or T are definately non-refundable. If you purchased through a travel site, you’d have to go through them, and again..you’re locked in no matter what by using those.

Travel Insurance is crap unless you spent several thousand $$$ on a trip, and even then its not for a case like this. Its only to reimburse you expenses due to delay or for emergency purposes if you have to change your plans…etc.
